What happens after tryouts?

The RYSA Competitive Selection Committee takes the data from tryouts and the data from the RYSA coach’s player evaluations and uses that data in combination to make team selections. Teams are set based on rankings only of those players who have registered on time for the summer season. Late registrants are not guaranteed placement on an upper level team, even if they were ranked on that team. Bottom line – please register on time! Once teams are formed, players are notified of their placement via a letter from RYSA. Letters will be sent out in December. The RYSA Competitive Selection Committee makes the final decision in regards to player placement.

Can the parents attend and watch tryouts?

Parents are welcome to observe from the spectator areas (outside the playing and evaluation zone).

Are any players pre-selected prior to the tryouts?

Team formation policy “locks” the top 1/3 of the players on his/her team into their positions for the next season. For example, on a U14 C2 Boys team, 5 players from their current roster are “locked” onto the roster for the next year. Those 5 players would then be automatically placed on the U15 C2 team unless they make a higher level team. What that means is that more weight is given to the tryout process and players who are not in the top 1/3 of their team are not guaranteed a place on the team they were on the season before. That is why tryouts are strongly encouraged!

What is RYSA’s tryout policy for players requesting to play at their grade level?

RYSA allows players to play at their grade level. For example, if a 6^th grade player birth date is in late August, they would be allowed to play on a U12 team with players in their same grade. However, you must submit your request by Friday, July 29, 2011 to RYSATryOutCoordinator@gmail.com. Please include the following in your e-mail request: 1) player’s name; 2) their birth date; and 3) their school grade in September 2011. Players trying out at their grade level do not need to attend both age group tryouts.

Who evaluates the players during tryouts?

Players are evaluated by independent judges with no affiliation to the players involved in the tryout process. This is done in an attempt to assure as unbiased an evaluation process as possible. Sometimes people ask why no specific, individual feedback is provided by the tryout evaluators to help players work on areas where they need to improve. The RYSA Competitive League Committee and Coaching staff don’t believe that tryouts are the venue for this type of feedback. However, knowing the value of this type of feedback, the Committee has added that responsibility to the duties of the summer competitive coaches, through the use of an online evaluation tool called Zoom Reports. These reports provide each player with an evaluation of their skills and areas where improvement is encouraged.

How is a player evaluated if they do not attend tryouts?

The RYSA Competitive Selection Committee will use data from the RYSA coach’s player evaluations from the previous season. Where not trying out could potentially hurt a player is if there is not sufficient data to make a determination for placement or they are a “bubble” player between the different level age group teams (i.e., C2 to C1). The benefit will go to the players that attended tryouts.

What if my child cannot attend tryouts?

Are players required to attend both tryout days?

Players should attend both sessions since there are benefits to being seen on more than one occasion. If you are unable to attend a tryout day, please inform the Tryout Coordinator at RYSATryOutCoordinator@gmail.com.

How are players evaluated at the tryouts?

Each player will have an opportunity to demonstrate their individual and team skills, knowledge, energy and attitude in small and full-sided scrimmages before an evaluation team. RYSA evaluates players based on their technical, tactical, and physical skills.
